17. What is the purpose of this website?
The purpose of this website is to preserve, celebrate, and share the local culture, skills, and oral histories of our region, while simultaneously providing unique educational and economic benefits to our community.
We draw inspiration from the nationally recognized Foxfire project, which began in the mountains of Southern Appalachia. Just as Foxfire empowered high school students to interview the elderly population to document vanishing folklore and traditions—like log cabin building and faith healing—our website aims to do the same for our area.
How We Emulate the Foxfire Model
- Cultural Preservation: We document and archive the knowledge, crafts, stories, and traditions of our older residents. This ensures that valuable cultural history isn’t lost to time and rapid modernization.
- Intergenerational Connection: By featuring interviews and hands-on demonstrations, we create a vital bridge between the generations, fostering mutual respect and understanding.
- Community Empowerment: The project is a living classroom. Individuals who volunteer in this project build essential skills in journalism, digital media, research, and communication.
- Promoting cultural tourism to bolster the area’s economy. In short, our website is a digital home for our local heritage, a dynamic learning environment, and a dedicated resource for the well-being of our community.
18. When I submit my story, will I be required to add anything to my story or answer any questions about things I did not wish to talk about?
No. We will not ask you to add, explain or clarify anything unless there is something that has to do with readability or grammar..
